Reigning by Prayer
Text: Revelation 5:12 – “Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.”
1. Our Default Setting as Believers
- After salvation, reigning is our default identity.
- Like a battered naira note never loses its value, no matter the challenges you face, your identity in Christ remains unchanged.
- God is King, and as His children, He has designed us to reign on earth while He reigns in the heavens.
- Prayer is the divine technology that connects earth to heaven.
Prayer = Communion with God
Prayer = Communication with the Father
Prayer = Intercourse between heaven and earth
Prayer is first for relationship, not just requests.
But it’s the name of Jesus in prayer that gives us acces to the throne room where the Father dwells. Philippians 2:10
2. The Power of Prayer
- The day you commit to a true life of prayer, you become a threat to hell.
- If Jesus (born of a virgin, sinless, Son of God) needed to pray, how much more us?
The devil’s tactics:
1. To stop you from praying.
2. To make you think prayer has no effect.
Prayer is how kings win territories – and no king exists without a territory.
Don’t enter any territory carelessly; maintain it through consistent prayer.
3. Prayer as Daily Maintenance
Many believers only pray when challenges arise, instead of preventing challenges through consistent prayer.
Illustration: Paolo Maldini (football defender) said, “If I had to slide tackle, it means I already made a mistake earlier.”
Likewise, waiting until crisis comes before praying is like a late tackle.
4. The Danger of Praying Amiss
James 4:3 – “Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.”
Praying amiss is like turning a real gun into a toy gun—no effect.
Causes of Praying Amiss:
1. Wrong Motives – (Jeremiah 17:10) God searches the heart.
2. Unforgiveness – (Matthew 5:23–24) Reconcile first.
3. Bitterness – (Ephesians 4:31; Hebrews 12:15) Root of bitterness hinders.
4. Distractions – (Isaiah 66:8; Micah 4:10) Travailing prayer is focused prayer.
5. The Key Prayer that Ensures Reigning: Speaking in Tongues
Acts 2:1–4 – The disciples were transformed after receiving the Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking in tongues.
Why Tongues Matter:
1. Doubt-Free Prayer
1 Corinthians 14:2 – You speak mysteries directly to God.
The devil cannot understand it, so he cannot plant doubt.
2. Stirs Up Spiritual Gifts
Paul: “I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all.” (1 Corinthians 14:18)
This stirred his gifting and gave him authority to conquer territories.
Proverbs 18:16 – “A man’s gift makes room for him and brings him before great men.”
Conclusion
Reigning is your inheritance as a believer.
Prayer is not optional—it is your kingdom technology for dominion.
Avoid praying amiss: check motives, forgive, drop bitterness, stay focused.
Engage in speaking in tongues: it is doubt-free, mystery-filled, and stirs up your gift for reigning.
A prayerless believer is a powerless believer.
A prayerful believer is a reigning believer.
