THE POWER OF THE TONGUE – PART 2
Text: Proverbs 18:21
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
Introduction: Welcome to the Month of August!
This is our Month of Reigning, as declared in Revelation 5:10:
“And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.”
We are not ordinary people—we are kings and priests by the making of Christ!
Our divine assignment is not to merely wait to reign in heaven—our reign is to begin here on earth. Heaven is God’s domain, but the earth He has given to the children of men (Psalm 115:16).
How Do Kings Reign?
One major way kings reign is through words.
A king doesn’t dig ditches with a shovel—he simply gives a command and it is done.
Ecclesiastes 8:4 says:
“Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?”
If you don’t understand the correct use of your tongue, reigning will be far from you.
Many believers need to learn how to talk! Not just talk anyhow—but speak with kingdom power and authority.
Proverbs 18:21 Revisited
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue…”
As we shared in Part 1:
Death = To Stop
Life = To Start
So, Proverbs 18:21 can be read this way:
“To stop and start things is in the power of the tongue, and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
Your words can start or stop things in your life.
Your tongue is the steering wheel of your destiny (James 3:2-4).
The World Knows This
Even unbelievers understand the power of words.
No diabolic ritual is complete without incantations—a series of spoken words used as a spell or charm.
Words are the backbone of every dark operation.
Hear this:
The devil has no new tricks.
He only perverts the principles of God.
If he uses words to enforce evil dominion, how much more should we use our words to enforce godly dominion?
Biblical Examples of the Power of the Tongue
- David and Goliath – 1 Samuel 17:41–49
David never allowed Goliath to have the final say.
Don’t let the enemy have the last word in your life.
Talk back—with Scripture and faith.
- Caleb and Joshua – Numbers 13:17–33
The ten spies said what they saw, but Caleb and Joshua said what God said.
They received the fruit of God’s Word—the Promised Land.
Are you saying what God has said about your life, or are you echoing what you see with your physical eyes?
Your tongue gives either God or the devil access into your life.
- Zacharias – Luke 1:5–25, 59–64
Zacharias doubted the angel’s message. To prevent his words from sabotaging God’s plan, the angel shut his mouth.
Your mouth can stop or advance God’s plan for your life.
- Mary – Luke 1:26–35
Mary heard the angel’s word and responded with faith-filled agreement:
“Be it unto me according to thy word.”
Her tongue aligned with God’s purpose.
- Baptism of the Holy Spirit – Acts 2:1–4
Why did God choose tongues as the first evidence of the Holy Spirit’s presence?
Because once the Holy Spirit controls your tongue, He can control your life direction (James 3:4).
Final Charge
Never forget this:
Your words open the door to either God or the devil.
Choose your words wisely.
You are a king, and where your word is—there is power.
Let the reign of your mouth match the reign of your calling.
