Prayer of Thanksgiving

Introduction

Thanksgiving is an essential aspect of the Christian life and a vital expression of our relationship with God. It is more than a response to answered prayers or a celebration of God’s blessings; it is a lifestyle of gratitude that acknowledges God’s goodness, faithfulness, sovereignty, and love.

The Scriptures instruct us to pray without ceasing and to give thanks in every situation. This establishes thanksgiving as an integral part of our prayer life and our walk with God.

1 Thessalonians 5:17–18 (KJV)

“Pray without ceasing.

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

Similarly, Philippians 4:6–7 teaches us to present our requests to God through prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, so that His peace may guard our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Until the Church consciously cultivates the art of thanksgiving, we may fail to fully appreciate and enjoy the benefits of our sonship in Christ. Thanksgiving helps us recognise God’s goodness, acknowledge His faithfulness, and approach Him with confidence and gratitude.

1. What Is Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is the expression of gratitude and appreciation to God for who He is, what He has done, and what He continues to do in our lives.

It can be understood in the following ways:

A. A Public Acknowledgement and Celebration of God’s Goodness

Thanksgiving is an open expression of appreciation for God’s goodness, faithfulness, and mighty works. It involves acknowledging His intervention and giving Him the glory for His deeds.

An example is Jesus at the tomb of Lazarus.

John 11:41–42 (KJV)

“Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.”

Before Lazarus was raised from the dead, Jesus publicly expressed His gratitude to the Father. His thanksgiving also served as a testimony to those present, demonstrating His relationship with the Father and affirming that He had been sent by God.

B. A Prayer That Expresses Gratitude

Thanksgiving is a prayerful expression of appreciation to God for His goodness, mercy, provision, protection, and faithfulness. It is the conscious recognition that every good gift and every perfect gift comes from Him (James 1:17).

C. A State of Being Grateful

Thanksgiving is not merely an act performed during church services or special occasions; it is an attitude of the heart. A grateful believer recognises God’s goodness in every season, whether in times of abundance or in moments of difficulty.

2. Why Do We Give Thanks?

Thanksgiving is not simply a religious obligation. It has spiritual significance and plays an important role in our relationship with God and our prayer life.

A. Thanksgiving Gives Honour to God

Thanksgiving acknowledges God as the source of our blessings and gives Him the glory for His goodness and faithfulness. It demonstrates our recognition of His sovereignty and our dependence on Him.

Psalm 50:23 (KJV)

“Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.”

When we give thanks, we honour God and publicly acknowledge His goodness in our lives.

B. Thanksgiving Accompanies Effective Prayer

Thanksgiving is an essential part of our communication with God. Scripture instructs us to present our requests with thanksgiving, demonstrating trust in God’s ability and faithfulness.

Philippians 4:6–7 (KJV)

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Thanksgiving shifts our attention from the magnitude of our challenges to the greatness of God. It helps us approach Him with confidence and allows His peace to guard our hearts and minds.

C. Thanksgiving Strengthens Our Faith and Confidence in God

Thanksgiving reminds us of God’s past faithfulness and strengthens our confidence in His promises. When we remember what God has done, we are encouraged to trust Him with what lies ahead.

Romans 4:20–21 (KJV)

“He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.”

Abraham’s faith was strengthened by his confidence in God’s ability to fulfil His promise. His example demonstrates the connection between faith, giving glory to God, and being fully persuaded of His faithfulness.

A grateful heart remembers God’s past interventions and remains confident in His ability to accomplish His purposes.

D. Thanksgiving Is a Spiritual Principle for Supernatural Multiplication

Thanksgiving is also demonstrated in the biblical account of the feeding of the five thousand, where Jesus gave thanks before distributing the available food.

John 6:11 (KJV)

“And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.”

Jesus gave thanks for the loaves and fishes before they were distributed to the multitude. Through this miracle, a small quantity of food became sufficient to feed thousands, with twelve baskets of fragments gathered afterwards.

This account illustrates the importance of gratitude and dependence on God, even when what is available appears insufficient.

Thanksgiving acknowledges God as our provider and expresses our confidence in His ability to multiply, increase, and provide according to His will.

Psalm 67:5–7 (KJV)

“Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee.

Then shall the earth yield her increase; and God, even our own God, shall bless us.

God shall bless us; and all the ends of the earth shall fear him.”

This passage reveals a connection between the praise of God’s people, the fruitfulness of the earth, and the manifestation of His blessings. Thanksgiving and praise are therefore expressions of our dependence on God and our acknowledgement of Him as the source of increase.

3. When Should We Give Thanks?

Thanksgiving should not be limited to particular occasions or favourable circumstances. The Bible identifies several situations and attitudes in which believers are called to express gratitude to God.

A. At the Remembrance of God’s Holiness

Psalm 30:4 (KJV)

“Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.”

We give thanks as we remember the holiness, majesty, righteousness, and faithfulness of God. His holiness is an essential part of His nature and a reason for continual worship and reverence.

As we reflect on who God is, our hearts should be filled with gratitude and our mouths with praise.

B. For All Things

Ephesians 5:20 (KJV)

“Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Thanksgiving should be a consistent practice in the life of every believer. We are called to recognise God’s goodness and give thanks in every aspect of our lives.

Giving thanks for all things does not mean celebrating evil, suffering, or injustice. Rather, it means maintaining a grateful heart and trusting God’s presence, grace, and sovereignty through every circumstance.

C. In Everything

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

God’s will for believers includes maintaining an attitude of gratitude in every situation. Whether we are experiencing joy or facing challenges, we can continue to acknowledge God’s faithfulness and trust in His unfailing love.

Thanksgiving in difficult seasons is an expression of faith, demonstrating that our gratitude is rooted not only in what God gives us but also in who He is.

4. How Do We Give Thanks?

Thanksgiving can be expressed in different ways, both privately and corporately. Scripture encourages believers to worship God with their hearts, voices, bodies, and lives.

A. From the Spirit and with a Grateful Heart

True thanksgiving begins within the heart. It must be sincere and flow from a genuine appreciation of God’s goodness rather than mere outward performance.

John 4:24 (KJV)

“God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

We should give thanks with sincerity, understanding, and a heart that is genuinely devoted to God.

B. Through Dancing

Dancing is one of the biblical expressions of joyful praise and thanksgiving. It involves the physical expression of our gratitude and celebration of God’s goodness.

Psalm 149:3 (KJV)

“Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.”

Dancing can be an expression of joy, celebration, and appreciation for God’s faithfulness. It is a way of honouring God with our bodies and expressing the gladness of our hearts.

C. Through Shouting

Shouting is another biblical expression of thanksgiving and joyful praise. It demonstrates our excitement, celebration, and recognition of God’s greatness.

Psalm 47:1 (KJV)

“O clap your hands, all ye people; shout unto God with the voice of triumph.”

A shout of praise is an outward expression of inward gratitude. When we reflect on God’s goodness, we can express our appreciation through joyful declarations of His greatness and faithfulness.

D. Through Singing and Praise

Singing is a powerful way to express thanksgiving and proclaim God’s goodness. Through songs of praise, believers declare His faithfulness, celebrate His mighty works, and encourage one another in the faith.

Psalm 100:1–2 (KJV)

“Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.

Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.”

Our songs of thanksgiving should come from hearts filled with gratitude and a sincere desire to glorify God.

Conclusion

Thanksgiving is an essential expression of our relationship with God. It acknowledges His goodness, strengthens our faith, deepens our fellowship with Him, and helps us maintain a heart of gratitude in every season of life.

As believers, we must develop a conscious and consistent lifestyle of thanksgiving, recognising that God’s faithfulness is not limited to the blessings we can see or the prayers that have already been answered.

Whether in times of abundance or difficulty, we are called to honour God with grateful hearts, trusting Him as our provider, sustainer, and faithful Father.

KEY TRUTH

Thanksgiving is not merely a response to what God has done; it is a lifestyle that honours Him for who He is.

“In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)

Closing Exhortation

Beloved, let us cultivate a lifestyle of thanksgiving, making gratitude an essential part of our fellowship with God. Let us remember His faithfulness, acknowledge His goodness, and continually give Him the glory for all that He has done and continues to do.

May our thanksgiving be sincere, our praise be joyful, and our hearts remain grateful in every season. As we consciously develop the art of thanksgiving, may our lives continually testify to the goodness, faithfulness, and greatness of our God.

Give thanks always, give thanks in everything, and let your life become an expression of gratitude to God.
