Text: Ephesians 6:10–15
Ephesians 6:10 (KJV) – Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
Ephesians 6:11 – Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Ephesians 6:12 – For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Ephesians 6:13 – Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Ephesians 6:14 – Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness.
Ephesians 6:15 – And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.
Introduction
Over the past few weeks, we have been studying the whole armour of God. Every piece of the armour has a purpose. None of them is optional because each one protects us in a different area of spiritual warfare.
Today, we will focus on the shoes of the preparation of the gospel of peace.
Many believers understand the shield, the helmet, or the sword, but often overlook the importance of the shoes. Yet no soldier can fight effectively without the proper footwear.
The Armour of God Commands Respect
One thing about weapons and armour is that they command respect.
Sometimes people are not respected because of who they are, but because of what they are carrying.
Think about it. An ordinary police officer carrying a firearm often receives a level of respect that he might not receive without it.
Likewise, Satan does not fear us because of our personalities, intelligence, or physical strength. He recognizes the authority of Christ in us and the spiritual armour God has given us.
When a believer is fully clothed with God’s armour, the enemy knows he is dealing with someone who is prepared for battle.
Today we will examine one important piece of that armour—the shoes of the preparation of the gospel of peace.
Why Shoes?
In everyday life, the shoes you wear usually reveal where you are going.
If someone wears football boots, you expect them to play football.
If someone wears running shoes, you know they are preparing to run.
If someone wears high heels, you certainly do not expect them to play football.
Imagine wearing high heels onto a football field. Before the whistle even blows, you have already put yourself at a disadvantage.
Likewise, every assignment requires the right footwear.
History even records that armies have suffered defeat because they lacked proper shoes. During the American Revolutionary War, many soldiers struggled because their shoes were worn out, making long marches and battles extremely difficult.
This helps us understand why Paul used the Roman soldier’s shoes as part of the armour of God.
The Roman soldier’s shoes were not ordinary sandals. They were specially designed for warfare.
But before we understand the shoes, we must first understand peace.
What Is Peace?
Peace is not merely the absence of problems.
Peace is the calmness of your heart in the middle of difficult circumstances.
Jesus demonstrated this perfectly in Mark 4.
Mark 4:36–40
The disciples were terrified by a violent storm, yet Jesus was asleep in the boat.
When they woke Him, He stood and declared,
“Peace, be still.”
Immediately the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.
Then Jesus asked,
“Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?” (Mark 4:40)
Notice something remarkable.
The storm was outside Jesus, but there was no storm inside Him.
That is true peace.
Peace is not the absence of trouble.
Peace is the presence of Jesus.
Where peace reigns, fear loses its power.
Where peace rules, anxiety cannot dominate.
What Is the Gospel of Peace?
The gospel of peace is the good news that through Jesus Christ we have been reconciled to God.
Because of Christ:
- God is no longer against us.
- Our sins have been forgiven.
- We have become children of God.
- God is now for us.
That is why Paul asks,
“If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31)
When you know God is on your side, you enter every battle with confidence.
Three Kinds of Peace
1. The World’s Peace
The world offers peace based on circumstances.
“If I have enough money, I’ll have peace.”
“If I get married, I’ll have peace.”
“If I get the promotion, I’ll have peace.”
But everything the world offers can disappear overnight.
That is why Jesus said,
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth…” (John 14:27)
The NLT says,
“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give isn’t like the peace the world gives. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”
The world’s peace depends on what you have.
God’s peace depends on Whom you have.
The world’s peace can never be lasting because Satan is called the god of this world, and his mission is to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10).
2 Corinthians 4:4
“The god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not…”
The world cannot offer lasting peace because it is under the influence of one who thrives on fear, confusion, and destruction.
2. Peace With God
This is the peace we receive the moment we place our faith in Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:1
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Peace with God changes our standing before Him.
We are no longer condemned.
We are accepted.
We are forgiven.
This peace is permanent because it is based on Christ’s finished work, not our performance.
3. The Peace of God
The peace of God is different.
It is the supernatural calm that guards our hearts while life continues around us.
Philippians 4:7
“And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
This peace is experienced daily as we trust God.
Peace with God gives us salvation.
The peace of God gives us stability.
One changes our relationship with God.
The other changes our response to life’s battles.
Why Did Paul Use the Roman Soldier’s Shoes?
Roman soldiers wore specially designed military sandals called caligae.
These shoes gave them several important advantages.
1. Stability
The soles contained iron studs that gave soldiers a firm grip during battle.
Without that grip they could easily slip and become vulnerable.
Spiritually, peace gives believers stability.
When you know who you are in Christ and trust God’s promises, the enemy cannot easily shake your faith.
You remain standing even when life becomes difficult.
2. Stamina
The shoes enabled Roman soldiers to march long distances and fight for extended periods without giving up.
Likewise, the peace of God gives believers endurance.
Life will test your faith.
The enemy will try to wear you down.
He will attempt to move you out of God’s will through discouragement, fear, disappointment, or anxiety.
But God’s peace keeps you steadfast.
It keeps you standing when others are quitting.
It makes you immovable.
1 Corinthians 15:58
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord…”
Peace keeps your feet planted when everything around you is shaking.
3. Mobility
Roman sandals were securely fastened to the soldier’s feet.
They allowed soldiers to move quickly without slipping or losing balance.
Likewise, God’s peace enables believers to go wherever God leads.
Fear keeps people stuck.
Peace helps people obey.
Many people miss God’s purpose, not because they lack ability, but because they lack peace.
4. Readiness
The shoes were lightweight and always ready for battle.
Likewise, believers should always be prepared to stand for Christ and to share the gospel of peace.
As Christians, we are not only called to enjoy peace—we are called to transmit peace.
Where there is confusion, we bring clarity.
Where there is hatred, we bring love.
Where there is fear, we point people to Christ, the Prince of Peace.
Application
Without the shoes of peace, life becomes slippery.
Fear makes people unstable.
Anxiety clouds judgment.
Worry weakens faith.
Panic leads to poor decisions.
But when God’s peace rules your heart, you can stand firm regardless of the storm around you.
Isaiah 32:17
“And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.”
Where there is peace, there is trust.
Where there is trust, there is confidence.
Where there is confidence, there is victory.
But where fear dominates, defeat often follows.
That is why throughout Scripture God repeatedly tells His people,
“Fear not.”
Not because battles will never come, but because He has promised to be with us in every battle.
Conclusion
The shoes of the preparation of the gospel of peace are far more than a symbol.
They remind us that we have peace with God through salvation and can enjoy the peace of God every day.
Just as Roman soldiers depended on their shoes for stability, endurance, mobility, and readiness, believers must depend on God’s peace to stand firm against every attack of the enemy.
The devil thrives where there is fear, confusion, and anxiety.
But he loses ground when believers stand firmly in the peace of Christ.
Therefore, put on the shoes of the gospel of peace every day.
Stand firmly in your salvation.
Walk confidently in God’s promises.
Trust Him in every circumstance.
And when the battle is over, remember Paul’s instruction:
“Having done all, to stand.” (Ephesians 6:13)
Don’t just survive the battle—stand victoriously in the peace of Christ.
