Ephesians 6:17
“And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
INTRODUCTION
The Christian life is a spiritual battle. Every believer is called to stand firm against the schemes of the enemy. For this reason, God has provided spiritual armour for His children.
Ephesians 6:17 introduces one of the most important pieces of this armour:
“The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Unlike most of the other pieces of armour mentioned in Ephesians 6, the sword is primarily an offensive weapon. It is used not only to defend ourselves but also to confront and overcome the attacks of the enemy.
The Word of God is not merely a book we read for information. It is a spiritual weapon that equips us to resist temptation, correct error, overcome lies, strengthen our faith, and proclaim the truth.
Jesus demonstrated this perfectly when Satan tempted Him in the wilderness. Each time the enemy attacked, Jesus responded with the Word—not with feelings or what He could see.

Therefore, every believer must learn not only to read the Bible but also to know it, believe it, speak it, and live by it.
WHAT IS THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT?
The Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God.
Ephesians 6:17
“…the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
The sword belongs to the Spirit because the Holy Spirit is the One who inspired the Scriptures.
2 Timothy 3:16
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God…”
The Bible is God’s revealed truth to humanity. It reveals who God is, who we are in Christ, what God has done for us, and how we should live.
The believer does not fight spiritual battles with human wisdom, emotions, arguments, or physical strength.
We stand on God’s Word.
WHY IS THE WORD OF GOD CALLED A SWORD?
A sword is a weapon used by a soldier to fight and overcome an enemy.
The Word of God is called a sword because it has the power to:
A. EXPOSE LIES
Satan is the father of lies.
John 8:44
The Word exposes the lies of the enemy with the truth of God.
Lie: “God has abandoned you.”
Truth: “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
— Hebrews 13:5
The Word of God gives us the truth with which we confront deception.
B. DESTROY STRONGHOLDS
God’s truth confronts wrong thinking and establishes right thinking.
2 Corinthians 10:4–5
“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;
Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
Many spiritual battles begin in the mind. God’s Word brings our thoughts into alignment with Christ.
C. DEFEAT TEMPTATION
Jesus used Scripture when Satan tempted Him.
Matthew 4:4, 7, 10
Jesus did not negotiate with Satan. He answered him with the Word.
D. BRING SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT
Hebrews 4:12
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
The Word of God reveals what is truly happening in our hearts.
It helps us distinguish:
- Truth from error
- God’s voice from human opinion
- Righteousness from sin
- Faith from fear
- God’s will from our desires
THE SWORD MUST BE TAKEN
Notice the language of Ephesians 6:17:
“And take… the sword of the Spirit…”
God has provided the sword, but the believer must take it up.
This means we must intentionally take hold of God’s Word.
You cannot effectively use a Bible you never read.
You cannot confidently speak Scriptures you do not know.
You cannot apply truths you have never learned.
Spiritual strength requires spiritual knowledge.
Hosea 4:6
“My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…”
A believer who neglects God’s Word is like a soldier who enters battle without learning how to use his weapon.
KNOWING THE WORD IS DIFFERENT FROM OWNING A BIBLE
Having a Bible does not automatically mean you know God’s Word.
A person can own several Bibles and still remain spiritually ignorant.
The question is not:
“Do you have a Bible?”
The question is:
“Does the Word of God live in you?”
Colossians 3:16
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…”
Think about what it means for something to dwell richly in you. It means the Word is not merely present; it is deeply established, influencing your thoughts, words, decisions, and conduct.
God’s Word must move from:
The Bible in your hand → the Word in your heart → the Word in your mouth → the Word in your actions.
HOW JESUS USED THE SWORD
Jesus’ temptation in Matthew 4 gives us one of the clearest examples of spiritual warfare.
Satan attacked Jesus with temptation, but Jesus responded:
“It is written…”
FIRST TEMPTATION — MATTHEW 4:3–4
Satan challenged Jesus to turn stones into bread.
Jesus answered:
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
SECOND TEMPTATION — MATTHEW 4:5–7
Satan attempted to misuse Scripture.
Jesus responded:
“It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.”
THIRD TEMPTATION — MATTHEW 4:8–10
Satan offered Jesus the kingdoms of the world.
Jesus answered:
“It is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.”
LESSON
Jesus did not merely know Scripture.
He knew the right Scripture for the situation and applied it correctly.
2 Timothy 2:15
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
YOU MUST KNOW WHAT IS WRITTEN
The repeated response of Jesus was:
“It is written.”
This teaches us the importance of knowing what God has already said.
When the enemy says:
“You cannot overcome this.”
You must know what is written.
1 John 4:4
“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
WHEN FEAR COMES
2 Timothy 1:7
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
WHEN TEMPTATION COMES
1 Corinthians 10:13
“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful… [and] will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”
WHEN YOU FEEL CONDEMNED
Romans 8:1
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…”
WHEN YOU ARE DISCOURAGED
Psalm 34:17–18
“The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
WHEN YOU NEED DIRECTION
Proverbs 3:5–6
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
WHEN YOU NEED STRENGTH
Isaiah 40:31
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
The Word gives you God’s truth and promises before the battle comes.
THE SWORD MUST BE IN YOUR HEART
The Word should not only be in our heads; it must be planted in our hearts.
Psalm 119:11
“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”
Memorizing Scripture is valuable because there will be moments when you may not have your Bible physically available.
What you have stored in your heart can become a weapon in the moment of battle.
BUILD A SCRIPTURE STOREHOUSE
Store Scriptures concerning:
- Faith
- Salvation
- Holiness
- Purity
- Fear
- Temptation
- Prayer
- Healing
- Provision
- Wisdom
- Marriage
- Relationships
- Purpose
- Trials
- Spiritual warfare
What you store in your heart today may become the weapon you need tomorrow.
THE SWORD MUST BE IN YOUR MOUTH
Revelation 1:16
“And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.”
Speaking the Word boldly is an important part of standing in faith.
The Word that is stored in your heart must also be rightly spoken with faith, wisdom, and obedience.
Do not merely carry the Word. Let the Word come out of your mouth.
THE SWORD MUST BE USED CORRECTLY
A sword can be powerful, but a soldier must know how to use it.
In the same way, Scripture must be rightly understood and rightly applied.
2 Timothy 2:15
We must not take Scripture out of context simply because it sounds good.
The goal is not to make the Bible say what we want.
The goal is to discover what God is saying and live according to it.
Therefore:
Know the Scripture.
Understand the Scripture.
Believe the Scripture.
Apply the Scripture.
Obey the Scripture.
THE HOLY SPIRIT HELPS US USE THE SWORD
The sword is called the Sword of the Spirit because the Holy Spirit works with the Word.
The Holy Spirit inspired Scripture and helps believers understand and apply it.
John 16:13
“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth…”
1 Corinthians 2:12–13
“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”
We should therefore study the Bible prayerfully.
Before reading, we can pray:
“Holy Spirit, open my understanding. Help me understand God’s Word and show me how to apply it.”
The Holy Spirit does not replace Scripture.
He helps us understand, apply, and live by Scripture.
THE WORD OF GOD PRODUCES FAITH
Faith grows through hearing God’s Word.
Romans 10:17
“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
When God’s Word enters your heart, it gives you a foundation for faith.
Faith says:
“God has spoken; therefore, I believe.”
Fear says:
“What if something goes wrong?”
Faith responds:
“God’s Word is greater than my circumstances.”
THE WORD OF GOD CHANGES OUR LIVES
The purpose of the Bible is not merely to give us information.
It is designed to transform us.
James 1:22
We must become doers of the Word.
The Word should affect:
- Our thoughts
- Our speech
- Our choices
- Our relationships
- Our character
- Our priorities
- Our attitudes
- Our conduct
A believer who knows the Bible but refuses to obey it is not demonstrating the full purpose of the Word.
The Word is not merely information to be stored; it is truth to be lived.
PRACTICAL WAYS TO USE THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT
A. READ THE WORD
Develop a consistent Bible-reading habit.
Matthew 4:4
B. STUDY THE WORD
Do not merely read chapters; seek to understand what they teach.
One effective way to study is to ask questions of inquiry:
- What does this passage say?
- What does it mean?
- What does it reveal about God?
- What does it reveal about me?
- What should I believe?
- What should I change?
- How should I apply it?
C. MEDITATE ON THE WORD
Think deeply about what God has said.
Joshua 1:8
D. MEMORIZE THE WORD
Store Scripture in your heart.
Psalm 119:11
E. SPEAK THE WORD
Declare God’s truth in faith and in alignment with Scripture.
Proverbs 18:21
Mark 11:23
F. PRAY THE WORD
Use Scripture as a foundation for your prayers.
John 15:7
“If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.”
G. OBEY THE WORD
Allow God’s Word to determine your conduct.
James 1:22
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”
THE WORD AND THE SPIRIT MUST WORK TOGETHER
We must avoid two extremes.
1. THE WORD WITHOUT DEPENDENCE ON THE SPIRIT
This can lead to intellectual knowledge without spiritual sensitivity.
2. SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCES WITHOUT THE WORD
This can lead to deception and error.
The believer needs both:
The Word to establish truth.
The Spirit to guide and empower us.
Everything we believe and practice must remain consistent with Scripture.
Isaiah 8:20
“To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”
THE ULTIMATE PURPOSE OF THE SWORD
The goal of using the Word is not simply to win arguments.
The goal is to:
- Stand firm in Christ.
- Resist the devil.
- Overcome temptation.
- Walk in truth.
- Live in obedience.
- Advance God’s Kingdom.
KEY LESSON
A believer who knows the Word is equipped for battle.
You cannot fight every spiritual battle with emotions.
You cannot overcome every lie with human reasoning.
You cannot defeat temptation merely by determination.
You need the truth of God’s Word.
Know the Word.
Believe the Word.
Speak the Word.
Obey the Word.
Live the Word.
CONCLUSION
The Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God.
God has not left His children defenseless. He has given us His Word as a powerful spiritual weapon.
Jesus demonstrated how to use this weapon when He faced Satan in the wilderness. His response was repeatedly:
“It is written.”
The strength of a soldier is not merely in possessing a sword but in knowing how to use it.
Likewise, the mature believer is not merely someone who owns a Bible but someone who knows God’s Word, believes it, applies it, obeys it, and stands upon it.
When the enemy brings a lie, answer with truth.
When temptation comes, answer with Scripture.
When fear comes, answer with God’s promises.
When confusion comes, seek God’s Word.
When trials come, stand on what God has spoken.
The battle may be spiritual, but God has given you a spiritual weapon.
TAKE UP THE SWORD OF THE SPIRIT.
DECLARATION
I am a child of God.
I am not defenseless.
God has given me His Word.
I will know the Word.
I will believe the Word.
I will speak the Word.
I will obey the Word.
I will stand on the Word.
Through the power of the Holy Spirit,
I will overcome every attack of the enemy.
I am victorious in Christ Jesus.
